He settles in the wreck of the boat that deposited him on the shore. There, he lives simply, collecting shellfish which he trades with the villagers for food. Full of innocence and generosity, he livens up life in Saint-Colomban as his imagination takes him. He's known as the village fool or the simpleton. This year, the region is in the grip of a drought, which has the farmers worried. Eugène, the owner of the Café de la Marine, advises Francis to go and pray before the statue of Saint-Colomban. The latter gladly complies, as he has been promised a good knife if his prayer is answered. Miraculously, the long-awaited rain finally falls... but unfortunately it turns into a deluge.
