Mrs. Tracy does not care for the young writer, and dislikes very much her little daughter's love for the young girl. Dr. Morrison, a young physician, is very much in love with Persis King, and this is another reason why Mrs. Tracy does not like the young girl. Olive Tracy declares she is deeply in love with the young physician, and employs every little trick and coquetry to try and win him. He, in turn, has centered all his time and attention upon the lovely Persis, and when they announce their engagement, Mrs. Tracy vows vengeance. She pretends to be sick one day, and phones for Dr. Morrison, who gives her a prescription and tells her "to be careful how she uses it, as it is a deadly poison." This gives the widow an idea. She buys a bouquet of flowers and saturates them with the poison liquid, and has flowers sent to Persis's apartment. Little Helen, the widow's daughter, has gone over to Persis' apartment and when the flowers arrive she is the first one to smell them. While Persis is writing a note of thanks to Dr. Morrison, whom she believes has sent the beautiful roses (Mrs. Tracy having attached one of the physician's cards to the bouquet) little Helen becomes unconscious from the poison and falls back in the armchair with the roses in her little arms. Persis becomes alarmed and summons the maid and Helen's mother. Realizing what she has done, the widow cries out in anguish, and confesses. Persis phones for Dr. Morrison, who comes and restores Helen to health. Mrs. Tracy, very glad and penitent, thanks the young people gladly and congratulates them upon their engagement.
