Helen, a laundress' daughter, and Marian and Made Helen, the little daughter of a laundress, and Marian and Madeline, the twin children of wealthy parents, are her favorite pupils. The twins' handsome young bachelor uncle falls in love with the teacher. Her birthday arrives, and all the children give her gifts--except for Helen, whose mother cannot afford it. The teacher comforts Helen, but she grieves over not being able to give her anything. Later in the day when the teacher visits Helen's home, an opportunity presents itself. The twins' mother had sent some laundry to Helen's home, and the laundress discovered a valuable pin attached to one of the waists. She showed the trinket to the teacher, and later, Helen, unobserved, by the others, slipped the pin into the teacher's bag. The loss of the pin is discovered, and the laundress remembers that the teacher is the only one who saw the pin. When the pin is discovered in the teacher's possession, her protestations of innocence are not believed and her little romance with the young bachelor could be ruined when Helen confesses how she unwittingly caused all the trouble.
