He is aided by his animal friends - a rooster and a horse. The rooster wakes the horse, who, in turn, pulls a rope that releases a bucket of water over Joe's head. Joe rises, goes down to the kitchen and is interrupted in his endeavor to make away with several pies, by the village belle, with whom he is in love. They seek a quiet place to spoon, but the horse butts in and interrupts them. The hotel keeper, and a farmer have an altercation started by Joe, In the city, Blackie Kaw, a crook, and his partner, Miss Twinkles, read an item to the effect that the farmers around Paris are depositing their wealth in Cy Perkins' Bank. The two crooks arrive in town to mulct the villagers of their funds. Miss Twinkles announces that she has lost a diamond for which she will pay a reward to the finder, Blackie, meantime, pretends to find diamonds around and disposes of them separately to the seekers of the lost stone. He gets their money, but the constable, in turn, gets the bank-roll. The constable stops the protests of the villagers, and it later happens that the constable did not get the real - but a fake bank roll, Joe falls in love with the girl crook and Blackie becomes jealous over her attentions to him, especially when Joe emerges from her room with his face covered with lip-rouge. A bell rings and Blackie is trampled in the rush. He demands to know where the fire is, but is told that the bell merely announces dinner. The crooks plan to rob the Safe that night, Joe, overhearing, plans to stop them, Joe and the village girl, disguised as checker players, sit down in the lobby. The two crooks arrive to rob the safe, and fail to make a noise sufficiently loud to wake up the pseudo-checker players. They explode the safe, but find no money, Joe discloses himself, shows the satchel full of money. The guests are aroused. Joe flees from Blackie with the money, and others in pursuit, Joe leads Blackie into jail, and escapes with the money. Blackie travels through a sewer, emerges out on the street and grabs the money again. He escapes, and, under the impression that he is entering a jitney-bus, gets on the police patrol wagon and is thus finally in the toils.See less
