She has to wear gorgeous gowns all day, and at night she returns to her child who is dying. Mrs. Devereaux comes into the shop on her way to the theater with her boy. The night before the doctor told Edith that her child must he sent away for the summer or it will die. Edith sees Mrs. D's purse which she has left behind and as she is about to restore it she has a vision of Mrs. D's child on the beach and her own in the torrid room. She takes the purse, but the forewoman discovers her. Mrs. D does not want to press the charge, but the store insists on doing so to protect its patrons. Edith is sent to the reformatory and her child to an asylum. Mag, an inmate of the reformatory, befriends her. Mrs. D secures Edith's parole and lends her one hundred dollars. But Edith finds that when she applies for her child she cannot have her, as the court has decreed that she is an improper guardian. Unable to stand the child's cries for its mother, she uses a part of the money to hire a car and steal the child. She takes it to a farm, where its health is restored. Spending his vacation on the farm is Dirk, an electrician. He and she fall in love, but she will not marry him. Confronted by the fact that her money is all gone she yields to his love and marries him. They return to the city. Meantime, Mag has been released and meets her pal, Bill, a crook. In the Grand Central Station Bill and Mag meet Edith and Dick. Mag recognizes Edith. Bill's telephone is out of order in his flat and an electrician is sent for. He is Dick. Mag recognizes him as being with Edith and tells him that she is a friend of Edith. Dick invites her to call. Bill does some crooked work and has to have money to escape. Mag has none. He tells her to go out and get it. Dick has in his possession the fund of a Benevolent Society to pay for the funeral of a comrade. By stratagem Mag discovers from Edith that this money is in the desk. She tells Edith that if she does not give her the money she will denounce her to the police and she will have to go back to prison and her child to the asylum. Edith is about to do so when she thinks of Dick and what it would mean to him. She is struggling with Mag when she sees Dick and calls to him. Mag tells him of Edith's past and that she will have the money or denounce his wife. He decides that he can stand a prison term better than his wife and gives Mag the money. Edith in despair calls the police and gives herself up as an escaped convict. She is about to part from Dick when they learn that Mrs. D has secured a pardon for Edith the day before she broke her parole and that they cannot hold her.
