Brenda agrees if only because she is attracted to Michael. Insecure Brenda, who ends up staying with a cold plagued Rhoda and Joe upstairs, makes any excuse she can to go to her apartment just so that she can see Michael. He doesn't mind as he too is attracted to her. When both Michael and Brenda come to the point of declaring their mutual attraction for each other, Michael makes a confession: that he is already involved with someone else. Willing to risk getting hurt, Brenda still decides to get involved with him for however long he is in New York. But both Michael and Brenda have to decide what to do once his assignment is completed and he is ready to head back to Washington.
