He recognizes in the novel his own earlier life when he was bright, ambitious and poor. As the second and third parts of the novel arrive at the publisher, the story of how the publisher accidentally killed his wealthy first wife while vacation in a cabin in the woods with his mistress is also revealed in accurate detail. The publisher, having mistaken his wife for a bear, had shot blindly into the night. Later, when he discovered her body early the next morning, he assumed she had come to the rarely used cabin to spy on him. He buries the body and eventually marries the mistress.
