After examining and deciding against several places of business that are for sale, the attention of the two is drawn to a hat store, outside of which a crowd of men are struggling to enter. They decide that this certainly is a prosperous business and after a fierce fight finally succeed in entering the store. Quickly making terms with the proprietor, they buy the store and make ready to attend to the wants of the customers, only to discover to their chagrin that the struggling customers are seeking not to buy hats but to pay their poll taxes before the legal limit expires. Nothing daunted, Pokes and Jabbs plan to make business for themselves by breaking the hats of every man they find. While Pokes attends to the breaking end, Jabbs business himself with selling new hats to all the men that Pokes has caused to patronize the store. Their Waterloo comes, however, when Pokes in his zeal to help business accidentally hits the tough guy of the district with one of his well-aimed brick throws. The tough catching sight of Pokes, gives chase and Pokes seeks refuge in the hat store followed by the irate tough. In the melee that follows the entire store is wrecked. Pokes and Jabbs receive the beating of their lives, and the tough proudly emerges from the store the possessor of a new hat and the affections of the charming cashier.
