The fickle Baron, however, is soon captivated by the youthful and pretty aunt of Marie and is discovered by Marie in the act of kissing her. Incensed by the cruel deception, Marie destroys all the letters of the Baron. A gust of wind blows one torn fragment among the rocks. Following down a dangerous path in search of it, Marie suddenly loses her footing and falls. She is picked up by smugglers who hide her in a cave. Among the smugglers she is surprised to recognize the father of a young lawyer who used to frequent her home, and who loved her secretly. Meanwhile frantic search for the missing Marie is made. Suicide is finally accepted as the only reasonable theory for her disappearance. Only the young lawyer, Bruni continues the search. Attracted by the action of some smugglers, Bruni follows them to the cave and engages in in which his father is seriously hurt. The smugglers in escaping and the young man returns to his home and goes immediately to his father's room to tell him everything, but his father's bedroom is empty and a short time later he sees him arrive injured and carried by his friends. In a dramatic scene the father and son come to inevitable explanations, and the young man finally learns that Marie is prisoner of his father. Together they go to the cave where they find Marie. She believes also that the young lawyer is one of the party. Bruni immediately gives orders that the young lady be returned to her family and begs her to denounce him and his father as cowardly smugglers. Marie realizes that the young lawyer is innocent, and admiring his bravery, tells his family a story aid justified his absence. Meanwhile Marie herself is very much in love with Bruni. Two years pass and Bruni, Sr. becomes repentant. Marie believes it due to the goodness of the son and visits a home for invalids, which Bruni, Sr. established. She there meets the young lawyer, who tries to escape her. Marie writes him a letter asking him to return to her home. The young lawyer does so and their marriage is blessed by the aged Marquis.
