Long before Portugal was founded in 1128, the Romans called it Lusitania, it being home to an undefeated tribe, the Lusitanians. Music has strong roots in Portugal, long before Fado was invented and began to dominate the traditional music landscape of 20th century Portugal: It is a country rich in a wide regional variety of chordophones, or string instruments: the Amarantina, Braguesa, Campaniça, Terceira, Beiroa; violas (small guitar-like instruments) with varied string combinations and regional tunings. André Miranda's documentary follows the experimental journey of Neil Leyton, Micke Ghost and friends as they integrate these medieval guitars into a modern day rock n roll album, the Lusitanian Ghosts' debut. Miranda also interviews ethnomusicologists, luthiers and other experts in a unique journey of musical re-discovery; as well as participating artists from Primitive Reason, OMIRI and O Gajo, who is re-inventing the viola Campaniça.See less
