His wife follows after him. In the cabaret the man falls foul of another frequenter. The two men draw their daggers and begin to fight. The neglected wife has come to the window, and, looking through, is the witness of her husband's fickleness, and later of his quarrel, and sees him victorious in the struggle, his opponent being stretched lifeless. She swoons, while the murderer takes to his heels before the police can arrive, and makes for his cottage. For a time the police fail to track him, but he is waylaid and overpowered, carried to gaol, and condemned to ten years' penal servitude. During his absence things go hard with his wife. The doctor of the neighborhood makes her his housekeeper ' her little daughter also finding a home in the doctor's house. The convict is released before he was expected, and, making his way to his old home, finds it deserted, and is told that his wife is acting as housekeeper to the doctor. He goes to the latter's residence, and demands that his wife return to him. She refuses, and the ex-convict threatens to go to the police if she has not complied with his command in an hour. The woman realizes that legal right is with her husband, and prepares to go, when, looking out of the window, she witnesses the death of her husband beneath a passing motor-car.
