One day the proprietress gives him a pile of boxes to take to a lady's house. Polidor sets out and almost immediately a collision with a pedestrian leads to damage to both Polidor and his wares. A party of high-spirited young ladies engage Polidor in conversation, and persuade him to show them the hats, from which they choose those they like best. While the remaining boxes roll away downhill with Polidor panting the rear. One stops at the feet of two old ladies, who open it, and, each desiring to become possessed of the hat, pull at it until it is a complete ruin. Another box rolls into the river, but Polidor recovers it, and eventually makes his appearance at Mrs. Celestine's with the hats, to encounter a reception which convinces him that he is not likely to continue for long in the millinery line.
