He decides to break off the secret entanglement, and does so, in spite of the entreaties of the woman. Afterwards she is taken to the hospital with her child, and on her deathbed sends a note to her former admirer to come to see her. After much hesitation and a terrible inward struggle he goes. Before she dies, the woman he has wronged commends their child to his care, and, after closing her eyes, he bears the infant homeward to his bride, to whom he tells the whole story.
