Among these brave men a legendary figure rose: Manuel Rodríguez. Passionate and brilliant, the lawyer Rodríguez became the attorney of the local authority, deputy, minister for several government departments and supreme director by popular acclaim. However, he wasn't as successful in any of his official positions as he was in his role as a spy and guerrilla commander, leading the resistance against the enemy. They put a price on his head and Rodriguez became one of the most wanted men in the country, but he managed to escape his trackers and made a vital contribution to the patriotic cause, thus gaining the people's respect and admiration. After the victory over the royalists, his immense popularity and his fidelity to the ideals that inspired the revolution made him become an uncomfortable character for those in charge of the country's government. They tried to take him out of the picture on several occasions by bribing him with special posts, money and privileges until he was cowardly assassinated in Til-Til in May 1818, at the age of 33. A man died; a legend was born.See less
