They are only waiting for him to get his degree to announce their engagement. The time arrives when he receives his degree as M.D., but the doctor refuses to agree to their engagement until Gerald has established a practice. In desperation he goes to a small town, where he is the only doctor, but after waiting some weeks and not having bad a single patient, hires a man to have his face made up as though he had smallpox. He isolates him in his house, then announces to the village that smallpox has broken out and the whole village must be vaccinated. His office is crowded with patients and he telegraphs to the doctor and his daughter to visit him. The result is that the doctor offers Forbes a partnership and agrees to his marriage with his daughter. After having liberally paid the man who has spent some days in seclusion, he leaves for the city with the doctor and his daughter and the fees of many hundreds of patients he has vaccinated.
