She is regarded as a saint by the religious Italian-Americans of downtown New York since she has visions which at times result in her experiencing stigmata. It is Good Friday afternoon and she again suffers the Passion of Christ on the cross, at the end of which blood appears on her palms. People crowd around her to touch her and so to be blessed. Michele enters and denouncing their superstition, he drives them from the house. He loves his sister intensely and feels that people take advantage of her and will be lost without her. During the celebration of San Gennaro, Michele tries to prevent people from taking Annina to lead the procession. They beat him up and lead her away. Desideria, Michele's lover, releases him. At a wedding reception, she accuses him of being in love with Annina. He kills Desideria and flees. As she dies Annina takes the veil. When Michele rushes in, she falls lifeless to the floor.See less
