A debtor calls and notifies him that he shall force the sale of Burk's cottage unless the debt is paid. Burk notes that the man carries a heavy purse, and plans to secure it. The man must cross the river on the ferry, and Burk runs ahead, invites the ferryman into a saloon and plies him with liquor till he is intoxicated. Disguising himself, he takes the place of the ferryman, and when the debtor arrives he is unsuspicious. Midway across the stream he attacks his passenger, robs him and throws him overboard. To divert suspicion he places the empty wallet at the side of the ferryman, who is slumbering on the bank. The latter is arrested and the circumstantial evidence against him indicates his conviction, when Burk, in a fit of remorse, confesses to the police. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
