Polidor is devoted to the 'cello, and plays the instrument at all times, to the disgust of his neighbor. The latter proceeds to garb himself as a policeman, carefully whitening his face. Polidor, who has fallen in love with the black man's lady, proceeds to black his face in order to visit her more safely. Polidor and the sham policeman pass on the landing, and Polidor proceeds to the [black man's] rooms to pay court to the lady, while the whitened [man], in policeman's uniform in Polidor's room, begins to smash the hated 'cello. Polidor calls the real police, and gives the impostor in charge, while the latter denounces Polidor's fraud, and both are carried together to the lock-up and dumped in the same cell. Here the humor of the situation strikes them; they proceed to wipe each other's faces clean, and then Polidor obliges with a solo on the still unharmed 'cello, to which the [black man] listens with delight.
