The very sexy Mme Tromper will pay him to bid for her at an auction the following day. She wants famed reclusive artist Jacques Du Mer's "Pale Rider". Five hundred thousand Pounds will be paid into Grant's account for the painting and he will get a substantial fee. Grant most certainly doesn't need Rip, the other half of the detective duo, on this case. Nothing can go wrong: he's a seasoned professional. The words ring a warning bell in Rip's ears. His only comfort is that Cynthia, the most popular girl in the school, invites him to a dance. At the auction Grant inadvertently makes a successful bid for a monstrosity of a five foot tall, twelfth century, valuable Persian vase. He doesn't have enough money left to buy the painting and it goes instead to the fabulously wealthy Mrs. Tate, friend of an influential art critic named Lionel Trotter. Grant then discovers that Mme Tromper has removed the money from his account. To make matters worse, the clumsy detective accidentally smashes the vase into a thousand pieces before the auction house con come and retrieve its property. It is Rip, the 13-year old mastermind of the pair, who realizes artist whose life has been ruined by Trotter, the vindictive art critic and Du Mer specialist. Determined to have his revenge on Trotter, Georgie decided to paint a forgery of the original "Pale Rider" and switch it for the original. Realising her father could be arrested for forgery; Judy came up the scheme to hire Grant to bid for the phoney "Pale Rider". If all had gone to plan, when Logan's cheque bounced the auction house would have reclaimed the picture and discovered it was a fake. Judy would have than switched back the original picture - and nobody would have been the wiser. However, thanks to Grant's bungling, the forged picture is now sitting in Mrs. Tate's high security mansion. Rip and Grant must find a way to recover it before the rich widow discovers it is a fake! Just as things are looking bad for the two detectives, the feckless Cynthia backs out of her date with a very disappointed, disillusioned Rip. Rip and Grant reconnoitre Mrs. Tate's home with the aid of a video camera disguised as a rat detecting device. Masquerading as the eccentric Jacques Du Mer, Grant pays a call on the delighted Mrs. Tate. Just as he is about to reclaim the picture in a brilliant and suspense-laden coup, aided by Rip's inspired dialogue, Grant over extends his performance and is unmasked by the snooty art critic. Rip comes to the rescue. Grant is saved from being thrown into jail, Georgie's artistic reputation will be restored, the original "Pale Rider" is returned to its rightful owner - and Rip finds a new girlfriend to take to the dance. Best of all, the irreparable vase turns out to be a worthless fake. Written by Anonymous See less
