The German engineer Karl May carries out surveying work in the Indian area with the foreman Rattler and some of his men. When the latter desecrated a necropolis, two of them were killed by Apache arrows and May was badly wounded. The others flee and leave May behind. When the chief's son Winnetou tries to scalp him, the club boxer jumps up again and hits Winnetou to the ground with his fist. May is taken to the Indian camp on a travois, where he is nursed back to health by the shaman, Winnetou's sister Nscho-chi, and called "Old Shatterhand" because of his light hair and his punch.
