Polidor is devoid of money, and quickly ensconces himself in a roomy wardrobe, with eating, sleeping, and smoking materials, and is carried into the landlord's rooms, and finds the wardrobe placed in the chamber of his lady-love, whom he serenades with the aid of a mandolin, which he has taken with him. The lady is mystified as to the source of the music, and when she sees the smoke of Polidor's pipe coming from the wardrobe she thinks the house is on fire, and screams for help. The firemen are summoned, and in the midst of the confusion, the wardrobe smashes open, disclosing Polidor, whose pertinacity so appeals to the girl's parents longer withhold consent to his betrothal to their daughter.
