He made his international debut in 2009, then won the 2011 World Championships in the long jump. His first appearance was at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and won the gold medal with a new world record of 7.35 meters. In 2015, Markus again set a new world record with an impressive jump of 8.40 meters at the Para Athletics World Championships. He won a gold medal once again at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. People say that "he is the only one who can break his record." He also won a gold medal in the relay with the German national team in Rio.
