They differ both in their characters and their life plans: the proud Edith, former head of studies, has lived alone since her husband's death and, despite her rheumatism and her daughter Kristin's efforts, is unwilling to be moved into a senior-citizens' residence. Meanwhile, Hermione fulfills the demands of her husband Klaus and their children and grandchildren in her limitless good nature. Klaus would rather work on his hobbies than help her around the house--what is his "Minchen" for, after all? Then one day the role of cozy-cricket-at-the stove ends when she finds a suggestive letter from an obvious lover in Klaus' laundry. She summons Edith and they make a spontaneous escape from everyday life: they fly to Mallorca, where Edith wants to fulfill her long-cherished dream of opening a small restaurant on the Mediterranean. Their savings are just enough to buy a seemingly-idyllic finca from eccentric realtor Dillman, but it turns out to be a ramshackle dump; meanwhile, Klaus has meanwhile blocked Hermione's account at home. Even when they find an unexpected ally in Dillman's fun-loving ex-girlfriend Lilo, and gallant, helpful Mallorca exile Joachim shows clear interest in scratchy Edith, the mood does not improve. A good plan is needed. Otherwise, not only will the dream of old age together in the sunny south end before begins--but also, the friendship between Edith and Hermione is endangered.
