Despite General Koenig's objections, the Free French 1st BFL was tasked with this operation. On the night of 23 to 24 October, after a long approach march, the 13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion (DBLE), commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Amilakvari, attacked El Himeimat.
