It's run by Franco Barbaro, apparently the lover of businessman Maurizio Cataldo, whose cultivated wife Franca flirts with Brunetti for reasons rooting in a much earlier homicide. Brunetti's father-in-law seems implicated. Vice-Questore Patta has reached mandatory retirement age, so he nostalgically decides to take an active part in the investigation one last time.
