Countess Eva, the count's champion, takes a great liking to the engineer and it doesn't take long for the two to share a deep love. This excites the jealousy of Joachim von Rüdersheims, a nephew of old Orafen. By chance, Oberinge learns of Nieur von Ringstetten's ingenious invention and envy and resentment awakens in him. Joachim von Rüdersheim confesses his love to Eva, but is rejected by her, in accordance with her father's will, she extends her hand to Ringstetten in the covenant of life, whereupon he is dismissed by the count. It is not long before misery come to the young couple. The old count has died in the meantime and arranged in his will that Joachim von Rüdersheirn would manage the property as long as Eva was Ringstetten's wife. After a difficult struggle, Eva decides to ask Joachim for money for her husband, but is rejected by him because she vigorously rejects his attentions. Ringstetten, who followed his wife, sees this and believes he has been betrayed. He decides to end his life in the nearby quarries. Here he discovers the shattered corpse of the chief engineer, who had stolen the invention according to which he was to be employed as director of the electricity works in Eisenfeld. Since it was not possible for him to take advantage of this ingenious invention, which threatened him in his position as director, he thought it better to end to his useless life. That's where Ringstetten comes up with an idea. He takes the dead man's clothes and also his letter of employment and pretends to be Geltem, which gives him the director's position in Eisenfeld. However, he has left his coat and revolver with the corpse of Geltem. By chance, Eva comes to discover the body, disfigured beyond recognition, which she believes to be that of her husband. Joachim, who had hurried after her, now threatens to sue her in court for the murder of her husband, because of the state in which he met her, with the revolver in his hand. The next morning, Eva is arrested. However, when the supposed Geltem learns of this, he goes to court and reveals himself to be Ringstetten, thus proving Eva's innocence. Soon the scene at the window clears up and Ringstetten and Eva reconcile. Written by Neue Kino-Rundschau - September 15, 1917 See less
