These workers form a new social class called "precariat" by economists, a neologism born from the contraction of "precariousness" and "proletariat". The rise in food and energy prices has considerably increased the economic insecurity of large sections of society, which until now belonged to the middle class. While the upper third of society has become richer despite the crisis, the lower third has fallen further behind.
