He does try to outdo them in one-upmanship by buying an expensive photo-copier, but is warned by his accountant that he cannot afford it in view of all the tax he owes. He manages to get an invitation to the Lady Provost's dinner, an opportunity he uses to try and gather support for his 'Local Man' campaign.
