Seyran was born in Istanbul, Turkey, of a Turkish mother and a Kurdish father. She moved to West Berlin at the age of 6 with her traditionalist family. She left home when she was 17 years old to avoid an arranged marriage and she fled with her German boyfriend. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 2005. She opened the Ibn Ruschd-Goethe mosque in 2017, located in a church, leading the way as a woman imam. It is the only liberal mosque in Germany today.
