After a religious schism in 1666, the Old Believers fled persecution in Moscow in search of a new home where they could practice their medieval customs. Since splitting from the church, they've lived in China, Brazil and Oregon before buying a few acres of land in a remote corner of Alaska in the late 1960s. But even on the edge of civilization their survival is threatened by modernization and internal conflicts.
