The violence escalated when the police killed two members of the Black Panthers and when the United States entered Cambodia as an extension of the Vietnam War. Airports were essentially completely unsecured and plane hijackings became common. But the most notable act of terrorism during the 1970s was perhaps the one that took place during the 1972 Munich Olympics, when the Palestinian terrorist organization Black September killed nine members of the Israeli Olympic team.
