Originally from northeastern Uganda, they migrated to Ethiopia in the early 19th century. Their agro-pastoral civilization links them to the Nilotes of Sudan. Although they became Ethiopian subjects around 1900, the Nyangatom have remained isolated from Abyssinian and foreign influences to this day due to the isolation of their region and its arid climate. The scarcity of resources and the pastoral way of life lead to constant rivalries between ethnic groups. Bloody conflicts broke out between 1970 and 1975. The Nyangatom feel their survival is threatened by the Dassnetch or Marile, their southern neighbors, who are more numerous and more powerful, formerly allies, now implacable enemies.
