By setting a series of stories in this fictional city we are able to see our own world differently and in the words of Darko Suvin, 'with sober, estranged eyes'. The film explores the alienation of the city's inhabitants from place and past. Beneath this is a subtext of apocalypse and the possibility of transcendence. We are met by qohelet, the author of Ecclesiastes as he reads from his ancient text, a text long considered dangerous for its pessimistic understanding of human endeavors. Yet the text feels at home in the setting of a modern city as we are confronted by two women whose lives belong to that city. Beneath all of this is a desire for hope and freedom from the vicissitudes of aimless time in the age of the city.See less
