Even the curate offering last sacrament gets a grim welcome, with a confession Speeltie stole the real Johannes's man's identity after running away from his abusive father and killing the man with whom his first beloved cheated on him, working his new family's tails off in a vain attempt to show her he became a success, and idly vowing to catch and punish Mitie.
