He saves a clueless mountaineer whose rope breaks after her partner and she failed to get proper info on feasible routes, which Jonas deals with diplomatically. He accidentally finds his late brother Frank's watch, which proves a critical clue as he also learns local businessman Karl Nollau is about to get permission to re-open the old mine in the reserve, and has a blackmail weapon to break Jonas's opposition: the Waldek family lumber business is on land leased from Nollau, and Frank lost the contract during his fatal accident. Academic biologist Emilia Graf is researching the wandering wolf and sparks fly, until she hears he's about to cave in to the blackmail. Karl plans the mine as a legacy for his teen son Tim, who hears all and steal the rangers' search map to go look for the lease alone, but gets into major trouble, which Joans saves him from.
