Internship stuff. Hi everyone,
It doesn't seem like this board gets many posts, but I figured that I would throw my question out there and get feedback from whoever's listening. I am about to start the 2nd year of my doctorate in clinical psychology and am already sort of worried about the predoctoral internship. My dream internship site happens to be one of the most challenging programs to get accepted to in my city. I was just hoping I could get some feedback from anyone who has been through the internship application process-- is there anything that I can do right NOW in order to be proactive in securing my dream internship site 3 years from now? Any advice is welcome. Thank you!
Emily

Hi I am a member of this community and I am wondering if I am the only one in this boat.
I have my MA in counseling and I have passed the NCE. But I don’t have a job. I graduated last May. I have not been able to find a position willing to take me on as an LPC-I - as you know the ‘I’ is for intern. So it seems that I am looking for a paid internship - because I am not ‘in school’ any more I don’t qualify for student aid.
I can not afford to work for free for two full years. I am willing to pay for my own supervision if I can just find a job. What I keep getting offered is free supervision if I work unpaid.
I am currently working at a crisis hotline for $10.41 an hour but because I am “relief staff” I have no benefits. I also do my own BIPP group once a week for 30 dollars an hour. Both jobs seem to like me and I have had good work performance reviews.
I am seeing my dreams of having an LPC go up in smoke. Is anyone else in the same boat? I am really getting disheartened.

military internships Anyone interested in a military internship? I've been curious. The training and the pay seems pretty good. I guess the downside is that your in the military for the next 4 years. I've read a pretty positive review in the Monitor but I know there is a dark side--and what is it?

One of the questions I've been told to expect in internship interviews is with regard to my school's model. My program is the practitioner-scholar model and I feel I can address that model quite well. I don't however, know much about the other models and why they are different.

Anybody out there? Is anyone else in this community in the application process right now/ Or are you all interns already?
How's the process going? Anyone else having trouble tracking down their former practicum supervisors for recommendation letters? My first application is due November 1st. Anyone else care to share? I'm feeling kind of alone out here....

New Psych Community for Dissertation-Level Students As I'm getting to work on my own dissertation, I'm finding that there is a community for masters-level theses, communities for dissertations in other subject areas (e.g., medieval studies) and general grad student communities...but I'm not finding any active communities for doctoral students working on their dissertations, psych or general.
So...I started psydissertation. Come join me over there! =)
Here is the community description:
This is a community for people who are currently matriculated in a psychology doctoral program and are at any phase of their dissertation research, for the purpose of discussing what's going well and what isn't and for cheering each other through the good times (e.g., completing drafts, coming up with a significant finding, passing the proposal or dissertation defense or even just getting some work done!) and supporting each other through the struggles (e.g., procrastination or writer's block, dealing with difficult or absent chairs or committee members, research snags, balancing dissertation and internship/work and family life).

Match Rates by Grad Program Now Available For those of you not subscribed to MATCH-NEWS:
MATCH RATES BY GRADUATE PROGRAM NOW AVAILABLE: For some time, APPIC has been very concerned to see the growing imbalance between the number of available internship positions and the number of intern applicants entering the Match each year. We have undertaking a host of actions and worked on a number of fronts to improve this situation. Clearly, ultimate solutions to the supply/demand problem will only come about as a result of collaboration between many organizations working to change the various factors that contribute to the imbalance. APPIC is already working with other organizations with this goal in mind.
However, the APPIC Board of Directors is also committed to doing what we can on our own to lessen the supply/demand problem. As a result, and consistent with our belief that full disclosure is beneficial, the APPIC Board has decided to publish on the APPIC web site aggregate information on Match rates by graduate programs for the seven-year period 2000-2006 (i.e., what is the overall match rate for each graduate program that has students entering the Match?). This decision was made after soliciting input from a wide range of constituencies and advisors. We believe that program Match rates are one important outcome measure of educational programs that should be readily available to students and the profession.
I am writing to let you know that this report is now available on the APPIC web page. You can locate it by going to www.appic.org, and then click "Match Statistics" on the right hand side of the home page. The report is available in two forms: organized alphabetically by graduate program, and organized by state.
We sincerely hope this information will be helpful to the training community - and to students in particular - as one piece of information that will contribute to the dialogue surrounding the supply/demand imbalance.

I received my match result....and honestly, I'm so disappointed. It's not one of the five places that I liked...though, thankfully, it's also not one of the two that I totally hated.
(Maybe more later... *sigh*)

Are those of you waiting for match day growing progressively more insane or is it just me!? ;-)
I thought working out like a fiend today might relax me....but although it felt good physically, I feel no more relaxed! I have, though, scheduled a massage for Thurs night!

And the wait drags by... Just wanted to give everyone waiting for match results a big *Hug* while we wait until Friday. Any tips for passing the time? I am home sick today, which is not helping...lol.
Anyone besides me think it is just sadistic to break up the results like this? I don't know if I will be crazier Thursday or Sunday night....

Internship Scholarship Hi all,
I was accepted to a bottlenose dolphin behavior research internship in the Florida Keys, and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could obtain, or at least search for an internship scholarship- internet searches aren't yielding anything good.
Thanks!

It's done!! My ranks are submitted and it is out of my hands! I ranked a total of five places. I had such a hard time deciding between #1 and #2, and between #3 and #4. I knew which place I wanted to rank last, lol.
So now we just have to wait until match day...
I wish everyone the best of luck!
