[mood \|accomplished]I am new to this group, and just finished psy rotation in my nursing school. We had four 8 hours shift and spent a lot of time in RT and participated in yoga classes. We haven't had any lecture on mental illness this year so far and we are almost done with the school. Now it kind make sense why a lot of nurses I met in Med/Surge just love to make fun of people with any hx of psychiatric dx. they just aren't exposed or educated enough about the illness. anyone with psy illness of any sort is fair game for them, including people who are just on anti-depressant. i felt horror about what they are saying about patient with bipolar or adhd and saw them derive great pleasure for keeping complete straight face & caring attitude then come back to the nurse station and cracking up and generally talking horribly about the pt. I am amazed how she remained so completely prejudiced for a decade about everything while maintaining a position of some influence. She's anti homosexual, anti minorities, anti psychiatric illness sometime just ignore call light from people with hx of psychiatric disorders and have student answers them all. That reminded me, some of our classmate still believe that prayer is what's needed to cure for psy problem and I guess it worries me because that's how they are going to understand mental illness for the rest of her professional lives. wth.

Based on multiple "where IS this policy you speak of?" complaints, I get to propose a policy for physical assessments on our in-pt. hospital psych patients. The theoretical policy is that patients get a full, head-to-toe nursing assessment once a week during day shift unless they have a medical condition that warrants it more frequently.So, if anyone would be willing to share, what kind of facility do you work in and how often do you do a physical assessment? Or what do you know of ones in your area? Thank you!

[mood \|blank]Hey - new to the community, but not new to nursing or psych. I've probably been doing this for about 20 years too long.I'm actually at work right now, and I'm frustrated as hell. We have patients who manipulate, and attempt to staff split - and I'm working with a relatively new nurse who allegedly was in counseling (like conducting some sort of talk therapy group) in psych prior to becoming an RN.She's actually a very bright person, but she just does not understand the concept of limit setting. She gives me the hairy eyeball every time I tell a patient "no - and this is why". It isn't like I arbitrarily make things up, or that I'm "punishing" people. I'm just following the treatment plan, and not allowing manipulation to waste the time our patients are "inpatient", you know?I've talked to her gently about this. And I've been more blunt/direct. I've given her resources. And still, with the evil looks when I follow the behavioral plans and stick to the unit rules like glue. I hate to go to the boss. I mean, I really hate to go to the boss. I like being able to tell her that we have problem solved and worked through our stuff and made things work. At this point, I'm not sure what else I could do. Anyone else deal with this sort of thing? Am I missing the glaringly obvious solution to the problem (other than letting the boss deal with it)?

[mood \|drained]There were two patients at the psych ward i work at in 4 point restraints today.. all the screaming..crying.. it was just too much for me and i broke down in tears. =(. i agreed that the restraints were necessary to prevent violence, but so much fricken suffering =(. what do you guys think about restraints?.. i believe they are a necessary evil. and how do you emotionally deal with 1:1 these people while in restraints.. it was so hard not to talk to them and be nurturing.it is times like this where i begin to question my future career in psych nursing =(.thank youx-posted

I wonder if there really is that fine line between genius and insanity? It seems like the most manic patients I have ever had are EXTREMELY intelligent, but just can't seem to place the knowledge that they have in an usuable form. Some of you seasoned psych people help me out here!
