New Support Forum for people in the helping professionsWe are writing to tell you about a new online support forum we have launched called 'Caring Souls'. It is a forum for anyone who needs somewhere to feel heard and supported. It is also somewhere where counsellors and psychotherapists and indeed anyone in a caring profession can come to support others, to support each other, and to meet other like minded people. We have built the forum and now would like to watch it evolve – it is you – the people who join and talk there, who will make it into a place that is safe, caring and supportive. The founders are both passionate about counselling – one is an experienced counsellor in private practice and the other is a counsellor in training with a huge knowledge of therapy and mental health issues through her own experiences. Please come and have a look round – you can tell us as little or as much about yourselves, can use your own name or a pseudonym, you can even have a link to your own website if you wish. We would welcome your input, your ideas and suggestions, as well as any articles or information that you think would be helpful to others. It is possible just to come in and have a look as a guest although joining allows you greater access to the boards (but that doesn't mean you have to commit to anything you don't want to do – there is no pressure). Hello All- There are so many groups around for people with disabilities and I am creating yet another one. =) This community is a unique because it is designed for those who are applying for, or in... or even graduated from graduate/professional school while having a disability. Okay, so I'm going back to school after quite a lapse. I plan to major in psychology. What I really want to do is work with veterans. I'm wondering if I should minor in something like military history or military management or something like that. Do you think that would be best, or would that be limiting myself? I was initially going to minor in english. Any thoughts?

Cross posted psych_prosI have to explain a little something first.I have congenital nystagmus - which is a rapidly moving of my eyes. Most people don't notice it unless they're close and looking directly at my eyes, or if I'm looking intently at something, I'll turn my head in order to focus with greater accuity. I've noticed that psychotic clients are quick to notice it. Sometimes, it works to my advantage - they think I'm being hypervigilant and looking over them. Often, it turns into some notion that I'm possessed or looking into their soul/thoughts - this isn't always as bad for raporte as you might think. (Sometimes clients don't lie if they think you can peer into their soul.) At this point, when someone points out to me so quickly, the big red flag goes up in my mind.It's just always struck as strange how quickly they notice. Often it's the 3rd question when we meet._Are you Mike -----?Can you sign this for me?Why do your eyes do that?_Believe me, I've given it great thought. My first advisor in grad school suggested that I would have a lot of problems with clients because of it. Other professors and supervisors said that concern was the most rediculous thing they'd ever heard - other's made it a large focus of our time.Now, granted, psychosis tends to take away a sense of social mores. So, maybe other clients notice and just don't say anything - but borderline clients don't seem to make it an issue, straight out manics don't notice. I have also noticed that art drawn by those with psychotic symptoms really focus on eyes...So, does anyone have insight into this? Is there some association with intentness on eyes and psychosis?

Hi everyone,I've been in the field (social work) for 5 years and am currently employed at a large university. I just took this job 8 months ago but I'm not happy. The program was designed in response to a rash of suicides at the university and I feel that it's more of a PR response than a clinical program. The pay is really good but the majority of my job is being on call and getting woken up in the middle of the night for what I feel are not real psych emergencies. Prior to this job, I worked in a psychiatric emergency room with severely mentally ill people. I think I have culture shock. The populations are extreme opposites of each other. Anyway, an ex co-worker of mine recommended me for a Director's position at an outpatient mental health clinic and I interviewed for the job today. It looks like they plan to offer it to me. Problem is that it's a pay cut of about $4,000.00 but the title is better and there seems to be room to move up, where as at my current job there does not seem to be. Also I won't be on call. My job would be a combo of a clinical case load and administrative stuff. Seems like a lot of growth potential. Just wanted to know what people think about taking lower paying jobs with better titles. How do you all weigh such options ?Thanks !
