_12:55 am_[mellyjc] | Business resources? Community hasn't been used in a while it seems..But I'm interested in a possibl forum to discuss the business tools aspect of our job...seems like everyone in private practice recreates the wheel. Most notably at this point I'm interested in feedback on Online appointment scheduling software.(I know, there is ample room to debate whether this is even a good idea - but I am more interested in the product reviews at this point). A colleague of mine boasts 25-30% increase of income from using it, so it feels like worth trying, even if I call to talk to them before the appointment.Anyone tried some of the options out there and can weigh in?I have some other tools I'd love to share my awesome finds as well, but i'll start here.. _9:08 pm_[siderea] | Question for USA Counselors re CEUs A cross-disciplinary organization I belong to gets its workshops certified with the APA and NASW to provide CEUs for those professions, and would like to get certified for counselors too. They were under the misimpression that they'd have to apply on a state-by-state basis, and were relieved to hear of the National Board of Certified Counselors' (NBCC) CE certification program. The question is -- and this is mighty hard to find out online[*] -- how many states' licensure boards/continuing ed orgs actually recognize the NBCC continuing ed cert?So I'm writing to ask if your state does. Mine, Massachusetts, does.[* Here in Massachusetts, the official document that reveals that fact can only be had from the MaMHCA'a MMCEP for a fee. I hope other states make their continuing ed requirements available to the public, or at least to their counselors, for free on the internet.] (Comment on this)

_12:42 pm_[siderea] | dsm5watch Blog SLAPPed by APA, Moved I just learned of the existence of dsm5watch, how the AP(try)A tried to shut it down with a SLAPP lawsuit for using the trademark "DSM5", and that it's now at dxrevisionwatch.wordpress.com. Thanks Allen Frances, MD, and the amazing 1bom_syn (http://1boringoldman.com/)!I've created a feed here on LJ: dxrevwatch_feed. Enjoy. (Comment on this)

_12:19 pm_[autumnalmonk] | Private practice For those of you who have some experience in private practice, I'm curious if you have any books or resources that you would recommend for an experienced practitioner thinking of transitioning into private practice. I'd also be interesting in hearing any hints or tips that you would like to pass along regarding the business aspects of such an endeavour. While I have nearly a decade of experience as a psychotherapist, nothing in my background or training prepared me for the mechanics of starting and operating a business so any help would be much appreciated. _2:10 pm_[mysocworknet] | My Social Work Network -For the Social Workers of this Community Hi all,Just wanted to let everyone know about a free resource I founded for social workers called My Social Work Network (www.mysocialworknetwork.com). You can create a professional profile, network with other social workers globally who share your interests, search thousands of social work jobs, post and browse resources, and keep current on social work news -just to name a few features. We just added free volunteer/internship posts for those who are either looking to fill a position or for those who are seeking a position. You do not have to be licensed to join, but you can find other social workers who are licensed by location, degree, expertise, school, company, etc. Just thought some of you in this community might find this resource helpful. My hope is My Social Work Network will help our profession to better connect and mobilize so we can better fulfill our mission of social and economic justice for all. Feel free to check the site out and if you feel it adds value to the work we do, please help to spread the word.Sincerely,Michelle C. Bussolotti, MSWFounder of My Social Work Networkwww.mysocialworknetwork.com (3 Comments |Comment on this)

_8:33 pm_[cretakano] | i am feeling the crazy burn of people who are court-ordered to have counseling and my personal phone rings constantly. not to mention the DHS workers who never return my calls. i want something different and i feel as though if i keep this up, im going to (not really) blow my head off. the strain is almost immeasurable at times. if you have had any luck at all in switching from counseling to anything else.. (profession wise).. please please direct me. and im in michigan! the economy is horrible here, and i wasnt even able to get part-time temp work over the holidays. id love a job where i go in, have lunch, come out! not have my phone ringing with clients, not driving to clients homes (im contractual-in home) and not setting my own schedule (it leaves me super lazy and not even wanting to schedule appts until like 2pm). ugh. ....yeah... i know im not the only one that feels this sense of.. "?why?". i feel like i have this background where ...im incapable of doing anything else but this.....anyone have some guidance for me? (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_4:27 pm_[bythebootstraps] | Very Specific Question I'm looking for one or two licensed professionals (MFT, LCSW or Psychologist) who live in the San Francisco Bay Area, who attended Pacifica Graduate Institute or has an interest in Depth Psychology. Some peers and I are creating a consultation group that will meet once a month. Currently, the balance of the group is intern-heavy and I am more comfortable with another licensed person besides myself in the group. Does this fit you? (Comment on this)

_10:16 pm_[cretakano] | ethical dillema of sorts i have a "friend" ...and i use that term loosely because i knew him in 8th grade. ...im now 27. he is having marriage issues. and a minor family problem. currently im licensed. im a contractual worker, and i set my own schedule. i have trust liability insurance, and i feel like taking on a case at my own will is perfectly ethical. problem that i am currently distraught on is whether or not, he would be considered a dual relationship. i have not spoke to this man in over 4 years. and yet, i was relatively close with him about ten years ago. i could charge him only a small fee, like, 20 dollars, because hes looking for cheap counseling. if i could help, maybe, maybe i cant either. but.. i need some thoughts on this subject. should i offer my services to him, at a very low cost considering what psychotherapy costs even on a sliding scale... or.. do i not do it.. because i DID know him well in 8th grade.ive given him links to low-cost facilities and they do not offer couples therapy. his only option is a sliding scale fee which ...as we all know is about 70 bucks.. MINIMUM.. help? thoughts? im perfectly able to conduct these sorts of sessions. (6 Comments |Comment on this)

_5:33 pm_[rechan] | Lifestyle adjustment I'm seeking advice and tips on changing an aspect of my behavior.Blaming ADD for all your ills is a bit overdone. With misdiagnosis, arm-chair psychologists and just blaming any behavior on it. However, I think I have a problem with it.In the short term, my attention is everywhere. I watch movies at 1-3 minutes at a time. I can go from the computer to a book to the television in a matter of minutes. Needless to say, I don't get a lot accomplished by spreading myself so thin, productivity wise.In the long term, I jump from project to project and inspiration to inspiration, and leave most of them a quarter to half finished. It's getting very frustrating, and I want to correct this. I want to teach myself to be more focused, both by the minute, and in respect to my life. I want to finish what I start, and stop biting off more than I can chew, then fleeing when my flighty interest wanes. What sort of steps can I take to strengthen my attention span, stick to my goals, and not stray from projects? Is there a constructive way to bottle the errant muse, or will that stifle my interests in both the here and the there? All I am seeking is improvements to my lifestyle to change my behavior.(I'm not certain if this is appropriate for this comm; the rules state it's not the place for psychological counseling, but this is more an advice request. Regardless, if it's inappropriate, I'll remove it). (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_12:30 pm_[rechan] | I'm seeing a mental issue in one of my family members I am not familiar with. I'm not seeking help with it, just curious about its name.My aunt's husband left her, after cheating with the neighbor. Since then, my aunt has, to put it in layman's terms, completely shut down. She doesn't bathe, doesn't come out of her house, "talking" consists of responding to a question with weak, one word answers. She was responsible for some foster children, but family members had to come and take care of them because she just completely did not care for them. What is that called? There is depression, and clinical depression/bipolar/other mood disorders, but this is brought on by an event. So what would this be classified as? _8:38 pm_[vorpalbla] | Talk Therapy For Schizophrenia I am very, very excited and moved by this book review. Although I am not psychoanalytic (the orientation cited in the article), I do provide ongoing therapy to some clients with (stabilized, medicated) schizophrenia and other chronic, severe mental illnesses. In my experience, this is a rare occurrence, at least in a community mental health setting such as mine. Now I've learned not only that I'm not the only one, but that there is a person with severe, active psychosis who has been helped by a talking therapist.Obvious disclaimer: this is not about a quantitative study, so Saks may be one in a thousand, or one in ten thousand, etc.( 'Talk Therapy For Schizophrenia' by Garry CooperCollapse ) (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_6:23 pm_[vorpalbla] | Dual-Dx engagement group (x-posted to counselors_etc)I work in a community mental health agency in a small city. I am, as far as I know, the only clinician there with dual diagnosis (mental illness + substance abuse) experience. It has been passed down from my boss's boss, to her, to me, that I am tasked with starting a dual diagnosis engagement/persuasion group. I think this is basically a good idea since a very high percentage of our clients abuse or are addicted to drugs. The idea would be a treatment group aimed at clients who may be actively using, may be at best contemplating reducing or stopping their use, and may or may not accept their mental health diagnosis and be willing to take medication for it. The goal is to provide education and personal connections that will move them toward the point where they are ready to change. Most or all will be residents of our agency's respite program, where they stay for several weeks or months on a voluntary basis. The respite program is next door to the clinic. It's run in a very permissive manner, i.e. no drug testing or Breathalyzers, come and go as you please, rarely kicks anybody out. This is not your traditional substance abuse treatment situation, although I think there will be some overlap. Has anyone facilitated or helped with such a group before? Any ideas? Recommended materials? Horror stories? Help!*Note that I am hoping to hear from people with relevant work experience. No offense intended to any undergraduate social work or psychology students--I'd be happy to have y'all as interns some day. (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_12:15 pm_[caringsouls] | New Support Forum for people in the helping professions Hello psyprofessionals!!We are writing to tell you about a new online support forum we have launched called 'Caring Souls'. It is a forum for anyone who needs somewhere to feel heard and supported. It is also somewhere where counsellors and psychotherapists and indeed anyone in a caring profession can come to support others, to support each other, and to meet other like minded people. We have built the forum and now would like to watch it evolve – it is you – the people who join and talk there, who will make it into a place that is safe, caring and supportive. The founders are both passionate about counselling – one is an experienced counsellor in private practice and the other is a counsellor in training with a huge knowledge of therapy and mental health issues through her own experiences. Please come and have a look round – you can tell us as little or as much about yourselves, can use your own name or a pseudonym, you can even have a link to your own website if you wish. We would welcome your input, your ideas and suggestions, as well as any articles or information that you think would be helpful to others. It is possible just to come in and have a look as a guest although joining allows you greater access to the boards (but that doesn't mean you have to commit to anything you don't want to do – there is no pressure). The forum is free to join. Why not give it a try? - you will be given a very warm welcome! Our web address is: http://caringsouls.proboards92.comIf you have any enquiries and would like to e mail us our e mail address is caring.souls.forum@googlemail.comWe look forward to having you on board! With kind regardsThe Caring Souls Team (Comment on this)

_2:03 pm_[rechan] | A job with a BA? I recently applied to several graduate schools, and it looks like all of them are going to reject me. One thing with which I am lacking is work and research experience in my field.I want to focus on social psychology. What are some jobs that I could seek out that I can be hired with only a BA, would be more applicable to my interest, and assist in my next round of applications? (Comment on this) |
