He was brought by his parents with complaints of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. The assessment included both formal and informal strategies such as interviews with parents, parent and teacher rating scales, and student's work samples. Results of this assessment showed that the primary and co-morbid symptoms of ADHD have a significant impact on child's academic achievement, emotional self-regulation and social interactions. The therapeutic process combined pharmacology intervention with parental psychoeducation and training, classroom management, behavioral treatment, and promotion of emotional and social skills. At the end of the 4 th grade, parent and teacher rating scales showed an attenuation of the aforementioned symptomatology and improvements in the quality of the social relationships as well in academic results. In the 5 th grade, J. responded well to the demands associated with the transition to a new school and grade, particularly, in respect to the social and academic requirements (e.g., additional subjects and teachers). The combination of multiples modalities of intervention resulted in improvements in social, emotional and academic domains of functioning.

The aims of this study are to identify the effects of suicidal behaviors on different dimensions of family life and to explore differences in depressive, anxiogenic symptomatology, and levels of stress and satisfaction with social support among family members of young people with and without suicidal behavior. Participants were 107 relatives of young people with and without suicidal behavior. Self-report questionnaires were used. Descriptive analyzes and nonparametric tests of comparison of means were used. The components of life most affected by youth suicidal behaviors were family dynamics, considering positive effects and effects in health. There were no differences between family members of young people with and without suicidal behaviors in symptomatology and satisfaction with social support. Results have implications for research in suicidology and for practices and policies to prevent suicidal behaviors of young people, namely in supporting parenting.

As tres nar...

The operationalization of the RTI model requires differentiated and increasingly selective levels of intervention. These levels were defined based on the data gathered in the universal screening developed with each child. The universal screening and the different levels of intervention focused on dimensions associated with subsequent success in reading and writing learning: (i) oral language, (ii) phonological awareness, (iii) quick naming and (iv) knowledge on written language. The project O Crescer do ler has promoted an: 1) intervention with kindergarten teachers, school psychologists and parents to increase emergent literacy skills, by means of a preventive and early intervention; 2) an articulation between educational services, based on an ecological and multidisciplinary approach; 3) bringing together politics, research, education and community to promote school success.

A late-developing cognitive tool is the cultural life script. The present study aimed at exploring the beginnings of its acquisition and at replicating its acquisition in early adolescence in a Southern-European culture. Study 1 established the Portuguese normative adult cultural life script, against which the cultural life scripts provided by 6-to 16-year-olds could be compared in Study 2. The acquisition of the cultural life script in early to mid-adolescence was confirmed with multiple indicators. In 6-to 8-year olds, life script knowledge was only rudimentary. However, children still agreed highly on a set of mostly non-normative life events which they named as typical for a normal life that are not part of the adult life script. We conclude that children's non-normative concept of life is less helpful for remembering, narrating, and planning a life than is the adult cultural life script with normative events.

To guide further research and improve therapeutic outcomes for adolescents, we reviewed all RCTs investigating mechanisms of change in the psychological treatment of adolescents to identify the most promising age-, disorder- or treatment-specific mediators. Following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews (PRISMA), 106 studies were included that reported 252 statistical mediation tests assessed with 181 different measures. Most often studied and significant mediators were cognitive, followed by family-related, and behavioral variables. Several mediators were identified to be promising for future investigations: changes in negative thoughts, dysfunctional beliefs and metacognitive skills; family functioning and parenting skills; as well as successful engagement in therapy activities and increased impulse contr...

There is strong evidence to demonstrate that psychological treatments are effective for these disorders, however, little is known on mediators and mechanisms of change of psychological treatment in adolescents and young adults. Understanding the pathways through which psychological treatments operate will facilitate more effective treatments. Aim We aim to conduct a systematic review, exploring the available evidence on mediators of psychological treatments for anxiety and depression in adolescents and young adults. Methods A systematic search has been performed on PubMed and PsycINFO databases to identify studies from inception to 23rd February 2020. Eligible studies include randomized controlled trials and trials (quasi-experimental) designs that have enrolled adolescents and young adults presenting with d...

The process of identity construction embeds the development of a sense of unity and purpose that mediates the equilibrium between the society demands for the individual to fit and the individual’s psychological well-being. Throughout this process, the formal school education plays a critical role. The current study examines the role school education held in three adopted youths’ construction of narrative identity and search for psychological well-being. Life narratives have been utilized in three case studies with young adopted. The narratives were analysed in reference to the Narrative Matrix Analysis System. All three narratives emphasized the school education period as the chronological benchmark that organized and influenced their identity construction and search for support towards belonging and adapting to the society demands.
