A sample of 140 randomly selected students participated in the study; of which 70 were allocated to experimental group (taught using task-based instructions) and other 70 became a part of control group (taught using grammar-translation method). A self-made attitude scale was used to explore the attitude of young learners towards English language both before and after teaching. T-tests were run to compare the attitudes of both the groups and to analyze if at all there was any significant improvement within the groups. Results of the t-tests revealed that the groups taught through task-based instructions exhibited a more favorable attitude towards English than their counterparts. This can be attributed to the fact that TBI is learner-centered approach with its emphasis on fluency and not on accuracy i...

Of various methods proposed by various linguists and scholars in the area, the researcher picked grammar-translation method (still very popular in Indian schools) and task-based language learning (found to be very successful in enhancing the listening skills of students) to examine their effect on listening skills of elementary school students. The study was delimited to students studying in private schools of Ambala district. The duration of the study was 9 weeks and it was experimental in nature following pretest-posttest control group design. A total of 140 randomly selected students were equally allocated to experimental (taught using and task-based language learning (TBLL)) and control groups (taught usi...

Its salient importance in both first and second language learning is undeniable. Hence, the teaching and learning of this skill should be given utmost priority in language classrooms. However, research, teaching and assessment in this field have been under-emphasized until recent decades. This neglect is because we take listening for granted and do not recognize its importance, as most people believe that we acquire it automatically without taking any particular training. The present paper begins with a broad discussion of background on listening research, then discusses why listening is a lost classroom art and ends with the discussion of strategies and techniques that can help make listening mainstream. The paper also establishes a framework for understanding how listening skills can have a positive impact on other language arts wavelengths viz. reading, writing and speaking.

Wherein most of the researchers have included full-length movies in their teaching followed by students’ comments of its effectiveness; the current research was carried out to examine if or not students will be able to find relevant clips from the list of movies provided and incorporate those in their group workshops after being exposed to the theoretical knowledge in their lecture class. To gauge how the participants received it and what suggestions do they have to offer for the improvement of this innovative exercise an anonymous survey and a semi open-ended interview was used. The research was conducted in three trimesters of academic years 2018 and 2019. On analysis of the raw data, it was found that the students rated the assignment favorably and reported that movie clips helped them understand the course material better and enabled them to apply psychological concepts to real-l...
