Some important elements of early monasticism are thus highlighted, such as the path of continual conversion, the separation from family and possessions, and the difference from the hierarchy. The monk is a simple Christian committed to his journey towards God.

If, on the one hand this image has been very useful to Consecrated Life in order to understand its vocation and mission in the church, it now appears even more important to assume this image as a criterion for the interpretation of reality.
The article offers some directions for the theological investigation from the various outskirts of the great family of the Church, intending to promote an even deeper understanding of this image and its application to Consecrated Life.
