Monday Nitro
New Orleans, Louisiana
December 13, 1999
New Orleans has been host to some wild parties.
But even this scintillating city wasn't prepared for the wild spins and spills provided by this week's Nitro. Only a week away from their Starrcade main event match-up, the unlikely championship duo of Bret Hart and Goldberg agreed to work together as a team – against the infamous Outsiders.
But there was only one problem...
PLUS: Tank Abbott gets hardcore, Sting and DDP find common ground and Benoit takes Jarrett to the top of a ladder.
Show Results
Backstage, Jeff Jarrett rammed Chris Benoit repeatedly into a steel loading door. The Crippler rebounded, however, and sent Double-J into a stack of boxes. When Jarrett failed to get up, Benoit left in disgust.
Announcers welcomed fans to Nitro and New Orleans.
TAFKA Prince Iaukea with Paisley d. Maestro with Symphony
After two elaborate entrances, these strange songbirds immediately attacked each other. Both men gave a spirited fight but were distracted by their opponent's respective valet. The Artist took advantage, rolling up Maestro for the pin.
Post-match, Jarrett el-kabonged both men with separate guitars.
In the ring, Jarrett challenged Benoit to a Bunkhouse match later in the broadcast. (Yes, the word "slapnuts" was utilized.)
Schiavone announced that Tank Abbot would fight Meng and – in one of the strangest match-ups of the year – Sting and DDP would face The Total Package and David Flair.
Backstage, Madusa caught Evan flirting with Spice. Madusa attempted to attack the Nitro Girl, but Evan and several officials broke up the debacle.
Backstage, Bret Hart approached the ring; Kevin Nash went looking for Scott Hall.
In the ring, Bret displayed both his tag and Heavyweight belt on his shoulders. Bret said he believed that he truly was the best but knew that Goldberg was the ultimate opponent. Referring to their Starrcade match, The Hitman assured that he wouldn't be beaten.
Cue Goldberg's music. Accompanied by security, the G-man approached the ring to address his tag team partner's comments. Goldberg reminded Bret that confidence didn't win matches and told the Hitman, "You're Next."
Enter The Outsiders. Standing in the entrance, Hall and Nash demanded a shot at the tag team titles. Bret and Goldberg quickly accepted.
Gene Okerlund Interview: Madusa
Angered by Spice's action, Madusa decided she would wrestle the blond bombshell during Nitro.
Outside, Roddy Piper – dressed in black-and-white stripes – exited a limo, rambling about The Powers That Be.
Backstage, Terry Taylor informed The Total Package about his Nitro match and his unlikely partner – David Flair.
Backstage, David chased off a delivery man with a crow bar. David took the package into his locker room.
Spice d. Madusa
Spice has the best entrance theme I've heard all year – but, unfortunately for the sprightly dancer, your theme song can't deliver a dropkick. Madusa was dominating the former Nitro Girl until Karagias came to the ring. Hoping to avoid misunderstandings, Karagias prompted Madusa to let go of Spice. While the lovers spoke, Spice attacked Madusa from behind and registered the pin. Post-match, Madusa treated her loverboy to a German Suplex with a bridge.
Backstage, The Powers asked Curt Hennig if he was ready for his match and discussed "the remote control." Rhonda Singh interrupted the meeting, but was quickly dismissed for not having an agent. The Powers then instructed Shane to find Piper.
Gene Okerlund Interview: Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Okerlund asked Duggan about his three mystery partners at Starrcade (Duggan will be facing The Revolution this weekend). The infamous commentator explained the stipulations of the match: If Duggan loses, he will have to renounce his citizenship. If The Revolution loses, however, they will be forced to do Duggan's janitorial services for 30 days. Duggan gave a rousing and patriotic speech, but the All-American was interrupted by a blackout. When the lights came up, Duggan was knocked out.
Backstage, The Powers spoke with Piper. The Hot Rod was assigned a match between Buff Bagwell and Hennig. WCW's creative team told Piper to "do the right thing."
Backstage, The Package searched for David.
Buff Bagwell d. Curt Hennig
Special guest referee: Roddy Piper
Pre-match, Piper told the participants that he wanted a fair fight. Bagwell started strong, but Hennig seemed more interested in Piper's actions than his opponent's offense. Hennig finally took control with several illegal moves, prompting Piper to admonish the Minnesota-legend (the Hot Rod went as far as to manhandle Hennig on several occasions). The distraction eventually cost Hennig his momentum – and a blow from Piper gave Bagwell the win. Post-match, Creative Control watched from the dressing room.
During the match, Buzzkill protested in the stands.
Backstage, The Package found David's dressing room. The chiseled superstar listened through the door as David spoke to himself.
Backstage, Jeff Jarrett approached the ring with a dumpster full of debris; Benoit approached the ring as well, carrying a ladder.
Jeff Jarrett d. Chris Benoit
Bunkhouse Match
Jarrett attacked Benoit in the walkway and immediately tried to cripple his opponent on the steel rail. Fighting with bull ropes, trash cans and cowbells, these two fierce competitors brutalized each other – but, in the ring, Benoit held a good measure of the advantage. Jarrett regained the advantage but was stopped by Dustin Rhodes. Referee Charles Robinson saved Jarrett from a low blow.
Dustin received the el-kabong from Jarrett, but Benoit used the distraction to knock Double-J to the floor. The Crippler attempted Air Canada from atop the ladder, but Rhodes accidentally knocked him to the ground. Jarrett covered Benoit and stole the pin.
Backstage, The Package futilely tried to discuss strategy with a teddy-bear-hugging David.
Outside, a mysterious Porsche pulled up at the arena.
Backstage, The Powers and Piper exchanged heated words. When Piper tried to fight back with a bat, he was outnumbered by La Parka, Creative Control and Hennig.
No Contest: Tank Abbott vs. Meng
Pre-match, Schiavone spoke of Tank's success in The Power Plant. Tank and Meng pummeled each other with fisticuffs, but neither man seemed to be phased. Using a belly-to-belly suplex, Tank took Meng down UFC-style – but the action couldn't be contained by the ring. While these two monsters battled on the outside, referee Nick Patrick counted both men out.
Backstage, Kanyon exited the Porsche and was greeted by two gorgeous women.
Backstage, Piper tried to attack The Powers while they were in the bathroom. The police stopped the Hot Rod from busting the door with a fire extinguisher.
Backstage, Tank and Meng continued to brawl.
In the ring, The Revolution bashed America and promised to destroy Duggan at Starrcade.
Dean Malenko, Saturn and Asya with Shane Douglas d. Harlem Heat and Midnight
Pre-match, the lights dropped and Midnight struck... literally. While Douglas joined the commentating booth, The Heat attacked Malenko and Saturn with renewed intensity. The Revolution rebounded, but only for a few short moments. Miscommunications allowed Booker T and Stevie Ray to gain control – but interference and a mistake my Midnight cost them the match. When the Girl Wonder injured herself, Stevie Ray was distracted and suffered a roll-up pin.
Mike Tenay Interview: The Total Package and David
Tenay attempted to talk to David but almost got jacked for touching young Flair's teddy bear. TTP seemed disgusted by David's insanity, but was more interested in talking about an injunction he'd filed against Elizabeth. According to The Package, Sting would not be able to use the sexy valet's services.
During the interview, Piper appeared. The Hot Rod was swinging a chair and demanding a match with Hennig.
Backstage, Rhonda Singh searched for representation, but ended up buying merchandise from Chavo Guerrero Jr.
Backstage, Tank and Meng continued the carnage...
Backstage, legendary wrestler Paul Orndorff told Mike Graham that The Powers had requested his presence.
In the ring, The Nitro Girls danced... until Rhonda Singh arrived. The big girl shook her booty – and nearly killed Skye in the process. Tygress, Fyre and Skye attacked Singh at the end of the song.
Somewhere in the woods, Fit Finlay continued to treat Brian Knobs like a buck private.
No Contest: Jerry Flynn vs. Norman Smiley
The Block
Smiley seemed outmatched from the onset, but the hardcore champion was saved when Meng and Tank stumbled into The Block. While Meng tossed Smiley out of the boiler room, Tank and Flynn threw down until the commercial break.
Backstage, The Powers confronted Orndorff for training Midnight. WCW's creative team fired the former Mr. Wonderful, but Orndorff refused to leave without a fight. The Powers decided that Orndorff would have to face Creative Control as punishment.
Backstage, Goldberg watched the monitor.
Mike Tenay Interview: Sid Vicious
Accompanied by his friend Seth, Sid seemed confident about his match with Steve Williams. Seth seemed very excited to accompany his hero to the ring.
Sid Vicious and Seth d. Steve Williams and Oklahoma
Power Bomb vs. Suplex Match
Pre-match, Oklahoma joined the announcing position. Williams looked strong in this match, but couldn't suplex the big man. Oklahoma lent his charge a loaded boot, but Vampiro provided a lengthy distraction that allowed Sid time to recover. On his second attempted, Sid won the match with a Power Bomb.
Post-match, The Outsiders took down The Vicious One. Giving Sid a preview of this Sunday, Nash dropped his Starrcade opponent with the Jackknife.
Backstage (after the commercial break), Sid received medical attention.
Mike Tenay Interview: The Outsiders
Hall and Nash claimed that Sid deserved his beating and that they would destroy the tag champions in the main event.
Sting and DDP d. The Total Package and David
No-Disqualification Tag Team Match
At first, it appeared that Sting and DDP would have the advantage – but, only moments after decimating David, Sting took his battle to Page. The Package watched intently, waited for an opportunity and struck the Stinger with David's crowbar. Elizabeth tried to stop the attack, but only encouraged TTP to grab a chair. When Liz covered Sting's body, TTP seemed tempted to strike his former valet. David, however, made the save. The crazed youngster walloped the Package in the back. Sting made a weak cover, but scored the pin.
Backstage, Meng searched for Norman Smiley.
Gene Okerlund Interview: Kanyon
After only a few moments, it became clear that Hollywood had changed Kanyon into a snobby, sniveling celebrity wuss. During his interview, Kanyon's agent Mr. Biggs has Singh arrested and Kanyon struck his old friend Bam Bam Bigelow in the back. (That's the movie business for you, folks.)
Chris "Champagne" Kanyon with Mr. Biggs and Entourage d. Bam Bam Bigelow
Pre-match, The Beast called Kanyon a sellout and demanded a match. Mr. Biggs insisted that Bigelow sign a waiver; instead, Bigelow wrote his name on Kanyon's melon. Bigelow brutalized his former Triad partner with a mixture of suplexes and bar brawl tactics (not to mention a low blow from off-the-top). Kanyon miraculously survived and grabbed the win after his finisher, That's A Wrap.
Backstage, Smiley hid from Meng.
Backstage, Big Vito and Johnny the Bull went looking for Disco Inferno. The goons discussed stuffing the Y2Cajun into a body bag and then a rive.
Backstage, Piper prepped for his chair match with Hennig.
Lash LeRoux with Disco Inferno d. Big Vito with Johnny the Bull
Body Bag Match
Still trying to avenge the tarring-and-feathering of Tony Marinara, Big Vito gave Lash a beating, goodfellas-style. In his first singles outing, Vito showed an amazing proficiency for both karate and dirty fighting. Lash rebounded, however, energized by his hometown crowd. With the help of Disco Inferno (and a chair), Lash executed the Whip Lash and placed Vito in the body bag. On the outside, Johnny the Bull donned a pair of brass knuckles and flattened both Disco and Lash.
Post-match, the goons throttled Lash and placed the Cajun Sensation into the body bag and took him out of the arena.
Outside the arena, Vito and Johnny couldn't find their rental car. While they searched the parking lot, Lash escaped from the bag.
Creative Control d. Paul Orndorff
Handicap Match
Orndorf, the former manager of WCW's Power Plant, illustrated why he was chosen to train the promotion's young wrestlers. After using an illegal object, Orndorff was overwhelmed by the numbers. Enter Larry Zbyszko and Arn Anderson. The fellow veterans gave Mr. Wonderful the assist, allowing Orndorf to score his trademark piledriver.
Post-match, referee Mark Johnson disqualified Orndorff and reversed the decision.
Backstage, The Outsiders calmly prepared for battle, while Piper acted out a seen from The Shining.
Outside, Vito and Johnny came for the bag – only to find Smiley hiding within the black plastic.
Roddy Piper d. Curt Hennig
Chair Match
Suffering with an injured arm, Piper could barely hold a chair, much less swing the steel at his opponent. Hennig took advantage early, but the crazed Hot Rod went ballistic. With one arm and one good hip, the Scottish brawler came at Hennig like a whirling dervish. Frustrated, Hennig walked back to the dressing room and took the count-out.
Backstage, cameras rushed to Bret Hart's dressing room. The Hitman had been attacked. Goldberg arrived a few moments later with trainer Danny Young.
The Outsiders d. Goldberg
World Tag Team Title Match
Unable to wrestle, Goldberg took both belts and approached the ring. The phenom battled both opponents, but even Goldberg eventually buckled under the pressure of the competition. Using constant double-team tactics, Goldberg seemed doomed.
Limping, Bret Hart charged the ring to help his partner. Goldberg and The Hitman fought off the Outsider and Goldberg downed Hall with the Spear. But, before the G-man could hit the Jackhammer, Hart's bad knee buckled, allowing Nash to score the upset pin.
