'establishment' and religious freedom. He proposes that formal establishmentnegotiated relationsh... more 'establishment' and religious freedom. He proposes that formal establishmentnegotiated relationships between the state and particular religious communitieshas given way to a concept of religious freedom that is nevertheless strongly political and normative. Danchin's definition reflects how the authors of this volume take establishment to mean deeper interactions that only the existence of a state church, accounting for the impact religious ideas have on the cultural setting in which church-state relations and laws about religious freedom are created and the long histories that shape contemporary practices. Covering such a broad range of phenomena means that the book suffers from disunity at times, with each new chapter bringing new countries, centuries, theoretical considerations, and methodologies. The division of the book into theoretical, historical, and legal chapters is somewhat forced; as Beaman and Sullivan note in their introduction, each chapter contains something of each category, making the categories unhelpful for placing the chapters in a bigger picture of religious establishment. The themes Beaman and Sullivan identify in their introductiondefinitions of religion, space and geography, and public-private distinctionsmight have been a more useful way to divide the contributions, placing histories of religious establishment more explicitly into ongoing debates about religious freedom and religion in the public domain. As it stands, these interesting themes, and the overarching question of what establishment is and how it might be useful, are slightly lost in the wide diversity of cases. For those who have followed the explosion of interest in religious freedom, Varieties of Religious Establishment offers a useful alternative perspective that complicates 'freedom's evil twin'. The book introduces establishment as a promising framework for analysing the relationship between religion and the state.
