9:53 pm In the words of The Jacksons, "I never can say goodbye." But I guess I have to.Tonight was parent-teacher interviews. The last set of parents to come speak with my associate teacher acknowledged me as having heard about the student teacher. Their son got a very low mark. The mother mentioned that she thinks the reason her son doesn't ask for help is because he thinks my associate teacher hates him. She then turned to me and said, "He really seems to have a strong connection with you..." then she turns to my associate teacher and says "but I think he's scared to approach you because he thinks you don't like him." I know that my associate teacher doesn't hate anyone. If any kid, even the kids who aren't serious, approach him, he'll help them and give his opinion. Anyhoo, I do feel there was a connection as well. There isn't a single kid who doesn't feel comfortable asking me for help and asking me questions. And even the kids who have given me a hard time have seen that I treat them fairly and I'm interested in helping them solve their problems. When I try to squeeze in in traffic, I'm rather aggressive, and I thank anyone I squeeze in front of, even if they've given me a hard time or didn't want to let me in. I think it makes them feel guilty. "Damn, I tried not to let him in, and now he's THANKS ME!?" I think they feel like a clod. With the kids, it's the same thing. They see me go that extra mile for them despite their behaviour and suddenly they want to please you.Tomorrow I'm giving them boxes of Smarties since they did some Smarties assignments for me. One kid asked if I wanted a party for my going-away, and I declined. A party would pale in comparison to what they've already given me. (6 canoes paddled | paddle my canoe)

9:51 am AdamShax.com Hello friends! I present to you "Bum ba da bum..."http://www.adamshax.comWhy Adam Shax and not my real last name? My mom's maiden name starts with Sha as does my real last name, and I wanted to represent my mom's side of the family in some way since her side of the family is very artistic. So "x" is the variable that represents both the ending of my real last name and my mom's maiden name. And there you have it.Ended up going with hostpapa.ca for 1 year at $7.95/year. Managed to figure out how to do everything without consulting anyone. Took a bit, but I managed. Soon as I figure out how to modify the site and make it "richer" I'll change it up. Just needed something up for now.Comments can be sent to adam@adamshax.com (13 canoes paddled | paddle my canoe)

1:32 pm Montreal I love Toronto. Love it. But the city is going to shit (in a manner of speaking) and getting uglier by the minute. I just spent some time on www.mls.ca looking at real estate and Montreal CARES about remaining beautiful, and the developments there are fantastic! Beautiful. In keeping with the "feel" of Montreal. I'd love to live there. I'm not sure about the winters, but I think I'd be fine. Blistering cold has never been an issue for me for the short bursts we get in Toronto. Montreal is easy to get around and all the "cool" areas blend into one another. A hop skip and jump and you're somewhere different and having a different kind of fun. Toronto has cool areas, but there is a certain amount of segregation between them. The city beautiful, and so are the women! And maybe the guys too. And perhaps it's because I'm on vacation when I'm there and more inclined to talk to whoever, but they seem friendlier too. So, I gotta figure out how I can live there someday. 8:55 pm My car smells like moth balls My new car smells to death like moth balls. I'm actually allergic to mothballs so I didn't know it smelled like moth balls. I thought it smelled like engine, so I guess I lucked out. But I want to get rid of the mothball smell.Anyone know the best way to get rid of the smell? Or do you know a shop that would guarantee they can get my car smelling fresh? Thanks in advance!!! (26 canoes paddled | paddle my canoe)

6:20 pm Nothing will stop me!!! My mom called me and said "Adam, are you sure you still want to be a teacher?" My mind raced as to why she'd say this. Did she talk to someone who told her some horror story? What could it be? I asked "Yes of course, why do you ask?" She said "Because of the shooting? Didn't you hear about the shooting?" I replied "Oooooh! Yes, I know about it." In fact, I had been watching it on the news for two hours and making pictures for our news story and recording reports. Funny how the situation didn't phase me at all, to a degree that when she asked the question, the shooting didn't even enter my head as to why she was bringing it up. Personally, I chalk it up to the same thing as a plane crash. If she called after a 747 crashed and asked if I still wanted to go on a trip to Brazil, I'd have wondered why she was asking. I worked here at the CBC during 9/11, and to a large degree, the CBC could be considered a target of distruction but those who seek to destroy and kill. 6 years later, nothing has happened. And nothing will happen. Just like when I become a teacher. Nothing bad will happen to me. Or at least, the chances are so slim it isn't worth thinking about or worrying about. 11:13 am Merci Triscuit I went for a most glorious run last night. I ran my 10k a few weeks ago but haven't run since because I got a toe infection. It was finally time to get back into it and I want to thank Triscuit for inspiring me to get back to it. So, I knew the fireworks were going to start at 9:30, so I timed my run so that I'd be at Ontario Place by around then. Just as I turned the bend and some trees got out of the way as I ran along the water closing in on Onatario place, the fireworks began and I continued to run towards them. It was a great backdrop! I've run towards sunsets and sunrises, but never a fireworks display!!! When I got to the actual grounds, I stopped for a break until they ended, then called some friends who thought it was later until I set them straight, and told them it ended. They missed it. Then I ran back home. As I ran up the parking lot to my building, a buddy of mine was just about to leave, having checked to see if I was around. He came up for a Cuba Libre, and we just chatted about stuff.Feels good to be running again, and this was one of the best runs I could have asked for as I get back to it.PS - When I passed Sunnyside Pavillion on the way back home, three girls were sitting having a drink, and one girl yelled, "I see you baby" as I approached, and I winked and made a shutter noise with my mouth, and when I passed and left them in the dust, she continued "shakin' that ass! Shakin' that ass..." Her friends laughed when I spanked myself in the ass a few times which was folloeed by catcalls. (2 canoes paddled | paddle my canoe)

9:38 am I was so close to destroying Google! I thought for sure I was going to cause a massive explosion of sorts. I was giddy with excitement just thinking about it! How come nobody ever thought of this? Then I got to my computer, and became a little nervous. This could potentially distroy google. Their stock would plummet and economies around the world would collapse. Men around the world would have to work harder to find porn. Women around the world would be subjected to inferior fashion tips and ab exercises! But my curiosity got the better of me. I had to do it. I had to see what would happen. So I went to google.com and typed in the search field... "Google". I just spent the last 5 minutes searching for Google, linking to Google, and searching for Google and linking to and searching for and... As many times as I did this, nothing happened!!! The world is the same. Or, arguably, not the same, since we have Google. (4 canoes paddled | paddle my canoe)

10:14 am Fantastic disaster! If something can go wrong, it will! So, I had some people over to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and the last people left at 3:30am. I got to bed, slept for 3 hours and got up at 6:45 to get to my 10k race. First mistake was parking at the finish and taking the bus up. The bus was late, although I thought it would be fine, but I didn't expect so many people would be taing it that early in the morning. Then bus driver dude said he wasn't going to stop at all the stops after detouring for the race. Since I had my friend's kit, I ran most of the way from Avenue road to the starbucks where I said we'd meet. Nobody was there, and the race had long since gone. Technically, I was the last person over the starting line. I had to duck under the starting line banner. When I crossed the mat, my chip made a beep. Since I had already run about a kilometer, I sort of ran an 11k race. I found out that my official time was 1:14. The gun time was the same as my chip time, which means my chip didn't work at the start. Luckily I had my watch and timed it.It took me until St Clair to catch up to the back of the pack. I had to stop 45 seconds for traffic before then, since officers had allowed trafic to start going again. The great thing about being the very last to start the race, is that you spend the WHOLE RACE passing people. It was funny being the only one to pass this one band (they were still playing when I got to the first one) and I did some air guitar and they all loved it. The guy with the shakers said "yeah baby!!!" I noticed there were some people doing run/walks and people on the sidelines would announce the times to run for a bit. At one of these, a guy told me to "slow down, your pace is too high" and as I whipped by another later on, I heard a girl say "holy shit, look at that guy" and then a guy after that said "Look at that guy go! YOU'RE DOING GREAT ORANGE!!! Whoa!!!" I was wearing my neon-orange Nike shirt, If you saw me, I was wizzing buy most people, even at the end of the race when I got my second kick.According to my watch, and taking away the time spent standing waiting for the light which shows up on my run graph, I managed to do the 10k 51:14, exatcly 1 minute longer than my personal best. My goal was to run the race with very little sleep, beers and natchos and chili consumed, and trying to beat my personal best under these conditions. I think I would have acheived that had I driven to the start rather than take the bus and run to the start. Then again, time would have been lost weaving around people in the crowded start, which was a non-issue for me this time around. Great warm up, sure, but it probably didn't help my time. As I passed each km marker, I looked at my watch, and I was managing 5 minute kilometers. So the entire race, I was pretty happy with my pace. It didn't really diviate or get slower, although I hoped the last bit would be faster, but it wasn't.Because of my lack of sleep, I couldn't think straight as things were going. I should have told the few runners also waiting for the bus if they'd like to grab a cab with me. I could have ran back to my car and driven up as well. Hindsight is 20/20. I felt bad my buddy Steve didn't get his chip time, but he ran with a girl who had hers and the started and finished together, so he sort of has a time. What I've learned is, make sure you get your friend's kit to them before the race. Park at the start and don't depend on the TTC. They are not the better way, at least on Sundays. Don't play enthusiastic air guitar while running, it wreaks havoc on your shins. Don't throw a party the night before a race. Although this was an experiment, based on previous 10k times, this was a slower 10k. Considering it's mostly downhill, it should be fast. However, I had to ignore my shins and quads which took more of a beating than my usual flat 10k. I know I could keep the same pace if it was flatter and go a bit faster since my shins and quads wouldn't give out as early. I'm going to try for a 4.5 minute km next 10k that I do. If I get my rest and eat and drink properly the night before the race, I should be able to do it. (14 canoes paddled | paddle my canoe)

4:38 pm Second run since the desert I ran my second run since Egypt. I didn't expect it to be so warm and was overdressed, but still managesd a great run. It was 48 minutes, 5 minutes of running for every 1 minute of walking so 40 minutes of running and 8 minutes of walking. In Egypt is was 4 minutes of running for every 2 minutes of walking. The shorter walking hardly seems like a break, but I loved it. Since I couldn't run for the last week of my trip in Egypt and got a late start getting back to it this week, I have some sore muscles. I iced the muscles around my knees as they were tender. Todays run I don't feel the same soreness, so I think I just needed some adjusting. Next week I go to 7 minutes running for every 2 minutes of walking. The 2 minute break is what I'm looking forward to. Specially with 7 minutes of straight running. My pace fell a bit to around a 9.5 minute mile but mostly due to being too hot from over dressing. Sunday I'm totally doing shorts and T-shirt!!! (paddle my canoe)

4:46 pm Happy is better than sad I work out at a gym at Skydome and on my way there, I must have looked really happy. A mentally retarded young man started smiling and then laughing and engaging me with his eyes as I approached the steps to the gym doors which he was sitting on. He raised out his fist saying "Hey hey!" and so I hit it with my fist. He said "yeah!" Then as I turned to continue he remarked "You're happy! Big smile!" and I agreed with him and said he was too. That young man made my day. Happiness is so contageous! (5 canoes paddled | paddle my canoe)
3:32 pm China 2008 Having just taken almost back-to-back trips you'd think it would be tough to think about where I want to go next, but I've decided. I love the Olympics and I think the 2008 games is a sign. So I think I'm going to go to China for the Summer Olympics. I'll likely go a few weeks beforehand to explore and then maybe stay a week afterwards to try and score with some female athletes. Hopefully a Canadian Gold Medalist, but any hot Olympian will do.Any advice on where to go and what to see? *looks at Tim-o-Tei* (7 canoes paddled | paddle my canoe)

4:16 pm 10-year mystery solved!!! So I finally found out who left me a mystery note almost 10 years ago. When I went to school at Ryerson, every student had a mailbox where teachers could return assignments and for students to communicate with each other with notes, leave tapes and assignments, scripts, storyboards etc. Kinda like email but requiring more effort. Another thing it could be used for is leaving mystery notes. One day in my first year, I got a note with a pack of six Oh Henry's attached. In this note, the mystery friend said that they thought we clicked, so I should have some Oh Henry bars. I mentioned this to my peers and we all tried to figure out who it could be. Today I met with two friends from Ryerson I recently reconnected with via Facebook and we went for lunch. When we went to Starbucks, we talk about our days at Ryerson and Jimmy said "Remember the Oh Henry I left in your mailbox?" I replied "WHAT!?" "You know, the note with the Oh Henry bar?""That was you!?""Yeah, I told you about it.""No you didn't!!!""Sure I did, I told you at the Tara Awards.""No you didn't!!! It was you!?""I thought I told you, hmmm...""Wow, I can't believe it. After all these years I finally know.""I thought you knew.""It wasn't just one Oh Henry. It was a package of 5 or 6 Oh Henrys.""Oh really? I thought it was just one.""Wow, so it was you, eh?""Yeah, that's so funny, I thought you knew."And so the mystery is solved. After almost 10 years. Thanks for the Oh Henrys Jimmy!!! (4 canoes paddled | paddle my canoe)
