Work-integrated learning (WIL) is one mode of education where these fragments should come together. This research seeks to address a missing part of that WIL model and understand the profession's view of what constitutes quality education as a United Nations (UN) Sustainability Development Goal (SDG).Design/methodology/approachUtilising a three round Delphi survey of the architecture profession engaged in WIL programs, this study reports on their perspectives of the key benefits and attributes of WIL and the value of WIL experiences as part of a quality higher education system.FindingsThe architecture profession confirmed the value of WIL programs as contributing to students developing an understanding of workplace culture and contexts. There was strong agreement that WIL experiences ...

Third space theory provides a theoretical premise that has the potential to reconceptualise the connection between universities and schools through disrupting binaries and encouraging the continual negotiation and reinterpretation of identities (Bhabha in The location of culture. Routledge, London, 1994). Through reconceptualising the spaces of, and between, schools and universities, third space theory encourages new ways of thinking about partnerships, shared knowledge and ways of working, and in doing so creates hybrid roles which challenge traditional roles or positions within both spaces. Drawing on interviews with several hybrid teacher educators, this chapter discusses the fluid roles and responsibilities of these emerging roles and considers implications for shifting professional identities in teacher education.

There are multiple models of professional experience that address the issue of integrating theory and practice. This article reports on findings of the implementation of the Coaching Approach to Professional Experience (CAPE) modelin an ITE program in Jambi University, Indonesia. Using qualitative focus groups, this research focuses on the perceptions of PSTs, a school principal, mentor teachers, teacher educators(lecturer) and a coach regarding the implementation of the CAPE model. The research findings indicate that the role of the coach helped PSTs as they were able to individualise and focus on developing teaching skills. However, several weaknesses were also identified. In adapting the model to Jambi University’s context, the structure of the CAPE model was too general. The coach wor...

The Supporting New Teacher's Practice professional learning program uses a blended learning environment which incorporates face-to-face and CMC technologies (asynchronous and synchronous) to support beginning teachers as they face the challenges of being new to the profession. This chapter reports on one institution's efforts to design and deliver a WIL course in a Teacher Education program adopting an open and distributed framework. The redesigned course, Orientation to Teaching, was a first year course in a Bachelor of Education (Primary) program at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. The redesign of the course was underpinned by a Distributed Open Collaborative Course (DOCC) design and as the workplace also became the site of learning, the theory of effective WIL curriculum (Orrell, 2011) also informed the design. This chapter examines the complexity of DOCC design in WIL contexts and uses Khan's 8 dimensions to frame the discussion.

However, little is known about pre-service teachers’ preparation in this area. This article addresses this gap by providing a case study of one approach to food education, which was purposefully designed to bring together two fields — health education and education for sustainability (EfS) — in teacher education in Victoria, Australia. This article outlines the ways in which this approach has the potential to challenge the conventions of both fields and ‘spaces’ of health (first space) and sustainability (second space), and gave rise to a possible ‘third space’ (Soja, 1996). This article uses data collected from Promoting Health Education, a 10-week course designed for generalist primary school pre-service teachers. It also utilises reflections from pre-service teachers and teacher educators (also the authors) to explore how they navigat...

This chapter analyses how 26 beginning teachers in Victoria, Australia, used Elluminate Live!® (Elluminate) to support their professional learning. Drawing on Third Space theory and a case study approach, this chapter explores issues around change and emerging technologies. In particular, how beginning teachers appropriate features of this tool to engage in both receptive and collaborative learning spaces, ultimately transforming their professional learning space. It raises numerous issues and challenges for eLearning in the Web 2.0 environment.

Multi‐age grouping provided opportunities for pre‐service teachers to work with others from different year levels on an interdisciplinary assessment task. As a result of this approach to teaching and learning, pre‐service teachers were challenged and resistance arose. These acts of student resistance provided opportunities for examining the dynamics ...

In this paper, I adopt this premise to analyse the spaces of visual arts education. To do so, I explore two key areas that emerged from interviews with three secondary visual arts teachers: firstly, how the visual arts are positioned within schooling spaces; and secondly, ...

Specifically, it focuses on how art education provided space for two students to explore their subjectivity. To examine this issue, I have drawn upon post-structuralist theory. In the article I briefly discuss this theory and its implications for research into the area of art education. Then I apply discourse analysis to show how students use their own art to explore their multiple subjectivities and lived experiences. As I will argue, my research highlights how art ...

Specifically, it explores the ways in which the students engaged with notions of space, and in particular ‘Thirdspaces’ in their art. Through the students’ visual representations, and the discussion around their art, I argue that the art that students create can become the point where space and subjectivity encounter and enfold in potentially transformative ways.

The Supporting New Teacher's Practice professional learning program uses a blended learning environment which incorporates face-to-face and computer-mediatedcommunication (CMC) technologies (asynchronous and synchronous) to support beginning teachers as they face the challenges of being new to the profession. This paper provides a case study analysis of a three year program in Victoria, Australia and focuses on the factors influencing participation. Through this discussion we suggest that participation in this blended learning program is complex and is influenced by four main factors: first, sharing teaching experiences; second, the different values assigned to the different environments; third, the demands of being a beginning teacher; and finally technology issues and self confidence in using various technologies. The paper suggests that more consideration needs ...

Measuring teacher TPACK knowledge has become one of the main areas of interest, however a number of theoretical issues around defining the constructs and how these constructs relate to one another have compounded research. This study seeks to contribute to this research by focusing on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers' self-assessment of their TPACK at Hanoi University Vietnam. It also suggests that there are issues in measurement and that reconceptualization of the framework maybe needed.
