Yeah, but no, but yeah (original) (raw)
Netflix has some 90s shows. When I was a teenager in the 90s, I didn't get to watch a lot of the shows that I wanted to because there were seven people living in the house who also had shows that they wanted to watch. So I've been revisiting some shows, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Fresh Prince, and Party of Five. Party of Five was the one show that I couldn't miss and that I watched every week, but now that I'm watching these shows again, I think that Buffy should have been my one gotta-watch show because it's so much better! I only saw an episode here and there when it was on, so it's been great watching it on Netflix.
Party of Five, on the other hand, is a really annoying show. I'm not even halfway through the first season yet and I am fed up. There's so much teen angst! The teen angst in Buffy is extremely moderate in comparison. And Charlie, the oldest brother, really gets on my nerves. He's always yelling at everyone else and being a big hypocrite. Then when someone else is like, "Hey, Charlie, stop being such a huge asshole," he's like, "I'm just upset that everyone thinks I'm an asshole when I'm being an asshole, okay? Now that I've stopped yelling, I'm going to be a super-whiny asshole!" I keep yelling, "Shut up, Charlie!" at the screen. Last night I watched the episode where he and Kirsten got engaged. They've known each other for about three months at this point. They dated for a few weeks and then she dumped him because he cheated on her. Then she was gone for a few episodes, shows up again, and finds out that she can't have kids. So he pats her on the back for a bit saying "there, there," and even though they're not actually back together at this point, he just proposes and she says yes, even though I was yelling, "Don't do it, Kirsten! You're making a huge mistake!" I don't think I'll continue to watch it.
And Buffy? It has everything: action, a strong female character who saves the world all the time, plenty of other strong female characters to back her up, exciting plot twists, comedy, and a hot librarian. I didn't think that Giles was hot when I was a teenager, but now that the character is maybe ten years older than me instead of 30, I can appreciate his hotness a lot more. I've also found re-watching episodes of the Fresh Prince to be fun.
How about you, lj? Have you gone back and watched episodes that you enjoyed in your youth? Which ones have stood the test of time? Which ones embarrass you? Which ones make you think, "How could I stand to watch this crap every week?"
