This book provides the first integrated account of how digital video can be used to develop teaching competence. It shows not only how using video can help teachers move towards more dialogic forms of teaching and learning, but also how such change benefits pupils' learning and behaviour. Based on extensive literature reviews this book provides an overview of "visual teacher learning" and summarises what is known about instructional improvements that teachers can achieve by engaging in it. These reviews and the author's empirical studies explain the activities, processes and organisational conditions needed for implementing visual teacher learning in teacher education and professional development. The book concludes with practical resources for practitioners incorporating the lessons drawn from theory and research.

The available evidence raises concerns about the feasibility of accelerated workplace learning for aspiring teachers. Intake assessments amounted mostly to selection procedures, while less attention was paid to advising candidates. In candidates' workplace learning, work often overrode learning. They received

Firstly, with eight participants, an instrument was developed to categorize contents of interactive cognitions. Secondly, with 30 participants, the instrument was applied to uncover contents of mentor teachers' interactive cognitions, before and after training in supervisory skills. After training, mentor teachers demonstrate an increased awareness of their use of supervisory skills. This indicates that mentor teachers not only seem to emphasize pupil learning and needs when conducting a mentoring dialogue, but simultaneously focus on their own supervisory behaviour.

The transfer of existing competencies to teaching is shown to involve a challenging interplay between experiences of continuity and change. Continuity was found at the level of beliefs. Change predominated at the level of the work environment. Continuity as well as change were experienced at the levels of behaviour, competencies, identity and mission. Several aspects of career changers' workplace learning are identified which deserve special attention in designing and implementing alternative certification programmes.

From the findings a model is derived which can be used to study mentor teachers' behaviour in mentoring dialogues. The model may be helpful in the further development of the quality of mentor teachers' behaviour in mentoring dialogues.

In this study, findings are reported from a longitudinal study conducted among 357 students, 128 cooperating teachers, and 31 university supervisors from 24 graduate teacher education programs. Quantitative survey data as well as in-depth qualitative data were collected over a period of 4.5 years. Development of teaching competence was followed from candidates' enrollment until their third year as in-service teachers. Occupational socialization in schools was demonstrated to have a considerable influence on the development of graduates' in-service competence. However, evidence was also produced for an impact of specific characteristics of the teacher education programs studied involving the integration of practical experience and theoretical study. Implications of these findings for the design of teacher education programs and the conduct of teacher education research are discussed.
