Dr. Wim Delsman ז״ל passed away on January 9, 2024 at the age of 80. He studied Theology (graduating in 1971) and Semitic languages (graduating in 1977) at the Radboud University, Nijmegen. From 1972 till 1977 he worked as researcher at the Institut für Ugarit-forschung, Münster, and from 1977 till 2007 as university teacher at the Radboud University, where he taught Hebrew, Aramaic, Ugaritic, and Yiddish. In 2000 he defended his Ph.D. thesis on the language of Qoheleth (Nijmegen: University Press); he published more than fifty articles about the history of Judaism, Hebrew, and Biblical exegesis.

This dissertation aims to determine the date of the Book of Qoheleth on the basis of a linguistic... more This dissertation aims to determine the date of the Book of Qoheleth on the basis of a linguistic analysis of the text. Earlier attempts to date the text vary between the 10th century BCE, at the time of King Solomon, to the year 4 CE, in which King Herod dies at Jericho. The discovery of two fragments of the Book of Qoheleth in the Judaean desert speaks against a later date than the middle of the 2nd century.The analysis of the language of Qoheleth leads to the conclusion that in all probability it was composed in the time of the Ptolemies (301-198 BCE). The most likely date is the second half of the 3rd century BCE.
