"Evenin' Carter."
Sam looked up from the papers she was reading to see Jack standing next to her with two glasses of Jello. He smiled and set the blue glass down in front of her.
"Colonel." Sam motioned for Jack to sit down, moving her piles of papers to make room for him. "What brings you down here? With Teal'c back, I figured you would be home sleeping." It was almost 2200 and while there were still quite a few people milling around base, most of the team that had been working on getting Teal'c home had long since departed.
"I was answering a few questions about Maybourne and where he might be." Jack took a bite of his Jello, showing no expression. She knew he didn't like getting grilled, but he didn't seem too put out by the situation.
Sam hadn't even thought about the ramifications of Maybourne's involvement in locating Conrad. She hadn't had time to talk to Jack about how they even hooked up, let alone how Harry had helped them bring Simmons down. She knew they must have reached some arrangement because Jack came back without him. She took a bite of her own Jello. "Do you know?"
"Nope." Jack turned to her and smiled. "When Harry I parted ways we had a nice unspoken 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' thing. I didn't want to know where he was going, and he didn't want to tell me." Jack paused for a second "Why are you still here? I figured you'd be home sleeping, but I checked and you were still signed in."
She smiled a little sheepishly. General Hammond had told her to go home hours ago, but she wanted to figure out what had gone wrong. "I was going over the diagrams trying to figure out how we broke the DHD. Since it was busted the Russians let us keep it here to study it - I told Siler to leave it in my lab so I moved in here to examine the diagrams. I didn't want to be tempted to muck around before I knew what was what."
"Of course you didn't." Jack shook his head - he was clearly not surprised. "Haven't you mucked around in enough DHD's over the last five years?"
"Sure, but this is the first one that has been mine." Sam grinned and dug into her Jello. She was hungrier than she had thought. She wasn't exactly sure why he had brought her the snack, but she was never one to turn away blue raspberry Jello.
"Ah." Jack ate some more of his own Jello and they sat in companionable silence for a while. Someone had left the TV on AMC and Some Like it Hot was starting. Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe - she bet McKay liked this movie and thought Marilyn was just another "dumb" blonde. But in the end, for a 'dumb blonde' she had certainly come out on top in this situation - he was in Russia and off her radar and she had her entire team back.
After five years together fighting aliens, saving the world, doing the crazy job they did - the simple act of sitting around watching old movies and eating Jello was rare - and enjoyable. "Thanks for the Jello."
"You're welcome." Jack smiled at her and finished his own Jello "So - I heard you had a bit of a dust-up with McKay earlier."
After all these years Sam wasn't surprised that Jack knew everything going on around the base - she wasn't sure who told him, but he always seemed to be in the know. "Yeah. I told him to 'suck a lemon' and honestly, if one had been handy I would have shoved one down his throat."
"Revenge by citrus! That's a new one." Jack looked bemused and Sam remembered that he had been running around with Maybourne when McKay was broadcasting word of his citrus allergy.
"He's allergic." Sam explained sheepishly.
"Ah. So Death by Citrus. That's rather blood-thirsty for you Carter." Jack looked almost proud of her.
"I wouldn't have hurt him." Sam clarified. "Just wave it around enough to make him swell a bit to have to visit Janet."
"That's almost worse - I'm sure she would find some big needles that just had to be used." Jack grinned, obviously thinking of the tortures Janet would dream up to impose on McKay - they both knew it wouldn't be anything too horrible, Janet was pretty fond of the whole 'first do no harm' thing, but it would be creative.
"That's what I was hoping." Sam smiled and finished off her Jello. "Well, thank you for this - I didn't even realize I was hungry."
"You're welcome." Jack started stacking her papers and cleaning up her tabs and pens
Sam shot him a confused look. "What are you doing?"
"Getting you out of here. Jello has been eaten and you're still hungry. Carter - it's your DHD. You can play with it anytime. You've been working non-stop for the last 48 hours. And I'm pretty sure T and Daniel are just about to my house with Star Wars and pizza. You wouldn't want to miss out that, now would you?"
Jack was making some very good points so Sam helped him pack up her papers. For all intents and purposes it really was her DHD now. Colonel Chekov hadn't expressly used the phrase 'you break it, you buy it' but that was the impression she had gotten from the Russians. Besides, they got McKay (though she was thinking they would figure out that was the raw end of the deal soon enough.)
"Pizza and Star Wars, eh? I thought that movie was on the list of movies never to be shown again at team movie night again?"
"Yeah, but Daniel and I thought with the whole killing Tanith and getting his revenge, he could pick the movie."
"That was nice of you." Jack had her papers so Sam grabbed the Jello dishes and followed Jack to the commissary door. She dumped them on tray return and took some of her papers from Jack as they started to make their way to her lab to drop them off. The DHD would be there tomorrow. Tonight, she was going to spend time with her team.
And having her own team, her whole team, was worth more than her own DHD.
